This project focuses on myths and tales; the concoction of which builds up the mythological make-up of a place. We are interested in exploring such phenomenon as well as concocting our own myths as by-products of historical records and representations of such histories. By looking at the historic mastery of understanding of a place through writing, the continual desire to understand what a place means to oneself, both as an individual experience and collectively as a cultural understanding, the project of exploration both physically and metaphorically, mirrors the myths of historic journeys into unknown territory.

GUESTROOM is a group of three artists (Maria Benjamin, Ruth Höflich and Miriam Schiran) who have worked together since 2001. The main activity of this collaboration has been an annual publication focused around ideas of location, in particular within the politics of territory and movement. They have also produced related events to launch each publication both in London and Germany. GUESTROOM explores notions of territory within their their individual practices. Miriam focuses on aspects of contemporary and historical colonialism and alienation. Within this she researches the fictional and fantasy representations of cultures looking at observational drawing and anthropological research as a basis for her practice, primarily, object based installation. Maria is interested in the enclosed garden as a representation of the desire to be the natural self; to be enclosed with nature, and thus separate from society and it’s complexities. She works mainly in photography and time based media. Ruth works with text and image and the re-appropriation of samples to create new and more complex readings of familiar signs. Her work is installation based, taking many different forms such as photography, time based media and text sculpture.
